As I was scanning different news blips that I receive, this one caught my eye. It was a reference to a message from Pope Benedict XVI in relation to the 44th World Communications Day. It appears the core of the message is that in this age of digital communication, there is a renewed focus that the reach of the church span beyond the physical bounds of a parish using blogs, websites and other evolving communications tools to reach out to all those willing to read and/or listen. As part of the message, Pope Benedict XVI states, “The development of the new technologies and the larger digital world represents a great resource for humanity as a whole and for every individual, and it can act as a stimulus to encounter and dialogue.”
In my view, this is a very solid direction to take as more and more information of all types is presented and reaches billion daily. As we are seeing in the private and government sectors, increased capability and use of various technologies to inform and attract audiences of all types is effective in getting a message across. Many religious organizations now have websites focused on their communities and relevant activities. The key now is to gain a level of expertise in its use and even more important the ability to craft meaningful messages that both deliver and attract.
I find it encouraging hearing the increasing number of messages from those in influential positions like Pope Benedict XVI and President Obama, taking positions in support of leveraging technology to enhance communications and interaction with the community at large. I look forward to seeing more on the progression of these efforts.
What say you? How are you embracing the new technologies for communication? Do you have a story to tell? I want to hear from you.
