Rod Hughes is the Director of Marketing, United States and Canada Region, for the Document Imaging business within Eastman Kodak Company. Kodak has had a long standing relationship with AIIM, as we have been in the Document Imaging space since the beginning. Nearly all of the Kodak Document Imaging team from Technical Managers, to Sales including Rod, have completed the ECMp training course offered by AIIM. Regarding AIIM Training Rod states, “it has been key to establishing the language and thought models we use to communicate to our resellers and customers.” I had the opportunity to interview Rod recently and discuss how AIIM training has been of benefit to him and the team at Kodak. I want to thank you Rod, for talking time to talk with me and sharing your thoughts and experiences with our readers. Bob: When did you get the idea to make AIIM Education part of your company's training focus and what were the drivers for the decision? Rod: The key driver is/was a focus upon raising our own organizational IQ. Only through the continued investment in our people can we continue to add the most value to the people they work with every day. Bob: How did this training expand your organization's knowledge? Rod: By establishing a common language and framework from which we could all begin to work through the larger integration scenarios. Bob: What do you feel is the greatest benefit gained form your organization taking this training? Rod: The aforementioned base level of understanding was needed to nimbly move through today’s business environment. Bob: How is your organization applying this new knowledge to address business challenges/issues for your company and your clients? Rod: It helps to provide us a panoramic view of challenges facing end users and solutions required to meet those challenges. Bob: For the future, what role do you see for AIIM education in your organization? Rod: AIIM has been and will continue to be a key influence on the direction of ECM. By working to set standards and establish a common framework for our industry AIIM will continue to evolve the baseline of education required by everyone working to streamline business processes, manage information, and ultimately become more profitable. Bob: What would you say to someone teetering on the edge of taking one of our training courses? Rod: Two words... Value/Burden. If you think of this ratio in any decision making, you can generally get to the right answer. When you look at the Value of truly understanding a set of problems, (or projects) and are able to efficiently communicate with other people in that same space, vs the Burden of not doing so and the rework that can be created, AIIM training is an investment with high value and very very low burden. Thus the ratio is so much greater than ‘1’ that you would be silly to not invest the time. Bob: Would you recommend us to your users? Why? Rod: Certainly, the training I have taken is clear, thoughtful, well delivered and accurate. I am uncertain of any other firms I could recommend. Bob: Is there anything else you would like to add that we may have missed? Rod: Just to state the obvious... Personal investment in things like training are often difficult in today’s fast paced business climate. Making the investment however is the only way to ensure that you (and your firm) can stay ahead in such an environment. Rarely is it the case that investing the time up front does not have manifold returns in the future. I want to thank you again Rod. I know our readers appreciate hearing from those who have lived the implementation experience. What say you? Have you lived the training experience? Do you have a story to tell? I want to hear from you and learn what you and your organization are doing. Looking to increase your level of knowledge? Join me in Chicago August 25-28 for the ECM Certificate course. I look forward to seeing you there.
