Here I sit in downtown Denver where the snow is furiously flying and is expected to leave an 18-24" thick blanket of this white substance across the area. As a matter of safety, employees stay home or head home early as they should. In a well established ECM environment, this may not have major impact on business as the employee is prepared and the systems in place to support telecommuting allowing business to continue as planned. The question is one of organizational readiness.
Access to the ECM system via web interface or secure VPN allows employees to access information vital to conducting their daily activities. Wikis provide the forum for collaboration, knowledge exchange and knowledge sharing which is accessible by web interface and BPM provide control over process flow with activity monitoring to ensure task assignment, completion and workload balance are achieved.
We do not need a blizzard, hurricane or other natural disturbance to drive us in this direction. Strategically, would it make sense? Telecommuting is not a new thing and when execute properly can prove to increase productivity not to mention it supports the position of being green by minimizing traffic congestion and the need to commute to an office location.
