Wanted: Tribal Leaders to Navigate the Corporate Plains
Tribal Leaders? Corporate Survival? You might be asking yourself, has Bob gone mad? In what way can these two be connected? The connection is simple and I will share with you my perspective on this statement.
Historically, mankind has been segmented into tribes and to a degree, still is even in what we call the civilized world. Each tribe is comprised of leaders and tribesmen or followers. The leaders, or elders as some are called, are tasked with setting a vision and leading the tribe into new directions for the purpose of survival and growth. If you look at the corporate world, each corporation is unto itself, a tribe. So, if we agree that we can agree that a corporation can be viewed as a tribe, we will call it a corporate tribe, then we must also recognize that there must be leaders, visionaries who can lead us to not only survive but grow. In some cases we may call it an emergence into new and expanding areas for growth but in order to do so, the leaders of the corporate tribes must also recognize and acknowledge those areas where there is weakness and room for improvement.
In a 2003 article by Chris Taylor of Smart Money magazine, was an overview of how several corporations had prepared for survival by taking immediate action which not surprisingly focused heavily on training. Training to tighten and strengthen their organizations or corporate tribes as I like to call them, in order gain stability and move forward in their visions. To me the message was clear in that the investment made was in their human resources, the tribesmen, to give them the skills and tools required to carry out the actions needed to reach the visionary goals of their tribal leaders.
We are faced with trying economic times, this is not news. How we face these challenges is the determining factor of how well or if we will survive. It also determines that if we do survive, are we prepared to move forward toward growth or simply remain as we are in which case, we will be faced once again with possible stagnation and extinction.
The time is now to become a tribal leader for your corporate tribe. The time is to bring the vision to the tribe and deliver training, develop their skills and provide them the tools needed to help the tribe survive and gain position for growth. Training is available through AIIM that addresses information management using a holistic approach that looks at the entire organization not just technology. True success comes from within when people, process and technology are combined and brought to focus in unison.
Are you a tribal leader? If so, I would like to know how you have addressed corporate survival and how training might have played a role in your efforts.
