A Guide to Messaging Archiving

Osterman Research has published an excellent white paper on messaging archiving.
They discuss the reasons to deploy Messaging Archiving capabilities under the headings of:
Legal compliance
Legal holds
Pre-litigation internal review
Other legal considerations
Reducing the impact of storage
Regulatory compliance and
Knowledge management.

They note that the value of preserving corporate knowledge stored in email systems is undervalued in many organizations.

They look at the important factors to consider when selecting an archiving system, including:
Delivery models
Opportunity costs
Messaging platform(s) supported
High availability
Scalability
Ease-of-use and
Extensibility for non-messaging archiving.

Osterman Research then looks at ten solution providers in this industry.  This is an excellent white paper.  Its one thing to understand the theory, but it’s more valuable to know that there are products out there that can manage emails.  It is also enlightening to see the number of clients that are actually addressing their email management issues.

Email management is something that all professional IT service providers have to handle for their clients, and it is always good to have the benefit of other solution providers’ experiences to use as guidance. White papers can be really valuable resources for anyone trying to run a business. In fact, I advise many computer consultants to provide free white papers on important subjects (like email management and others!) as incentives for prospects and new clients to build relationships.
